Casle Crags
Starting from the Vista Point trailhead in Castle Crags State Park...this is a very beautiful hike....about 1/2 up you reach the split for Castle Dome and Indian Springs...head over the short distance to Indian Springs (worth it) then back to continue the harder part of the hike up to Castle Dome. Once there the scenery is awesome and there are several places where you can hike without gear on some of the rocky crags and on Castle Dome itself. This is rated strenuous but really given the short distance and minimal elevation gain of about 2300 ft...I wouldn't classify it as such. For the weekend warrior yes it can be a test as confirmed by several people I passed on the way down. The campgrounds in the State Park are nice and it is just a couple of miles into Dunsmuir which is a cool little town along the Sacramento River with good eateries! One the way up just continue to follow signs for Castle Crag Trail/Castle Dome....on the way down same thing but don't miss the intersecting trails for the return to your car...Vista Point!! I wandered off on an Interstate 5 trail breifly before I realized my mistake!

the guidebook is a very superficial overview of the immense amount of rock here.
we well overshot Hubris by circumnavigating the Castle dome counterclock-wise. it was an adventure but Mark, Robert and I would have preferred to stick to climbing cosmic wall than a roped simul hike of a wild valley. It was fun but in hindsight we should have stuck to main trail. Oh this decision was in part due to the park being closed. so hiking in from I-5.

Castle Dome trail twice
A nice hike on a good trail up to 4.800' next Castle Dome. Great views of Shasta. This can be a real hot hike in summer. Again September 23 '11.

Gorgeous
Amazing sheer drops from top of dome. Fairly tedious approach.

Night at the Castle
Starting from Ranger station around 11 AM. Hiked to top and spent the night alone in the Castle. Woke up to beautiful sunrise on cliffs and Mt. Shasta. Met lots of people on the way down using the shorter trail.
