"After the first glass, you see things as you wish they were. After the second, you see things as they are not. Finally, you see things as they really are, which is the most horrible thing in the world."

Ascent in soft snowThe day was rather too warm for this route - I realised after my footstep collapsed and I slowly slid to the bottom of the gully! Took a couple of belay stances on the way for safety. Not fantastic conditions but nice to do.

My first ever Scottish Gulley!Had to take a guess at the date - I think it was Easter holidays 1973...
I was under instruction and we certainly climbed using one wooden hafted ice-axe - and possibly without crampons and cutting steps! Back then I seem to recall being taught step-cutting before you were set loose in crampons. A year or so later I climbed it again, I think with 12 point crampons, but my companion had vintage 1940's 10-pointers!

High in the GradeHigh in the grade for Grade I, perhaps I/II is more appropriate. Ice tools, as opposed to a single ice axe, is handy. We moved together for the whole route, though I never really felt like I needed the protection.
