From the numbers that Xandish gives under "overall time" it certainly looks like it could be done as a day hike, for HIM. Once when starting up the trail on this route I passed a climber who had done just that. He looked fresh as a daisy. Trick is to know what your objectives are, what your capabilities are, and plan accordingly.
