Magee trail
Nice day hike along the Magee trail. Added Crater with Magee, the road was easily drivable to the trailhead, though there was some debris on the road. There was an amazing amount of downed wood in the area, but it rarely obstructed the trail.

Magee Trail
Came in from the Magee Trailhead, up the rarely used Magee Trail. That first view of the crater rim from just above the junction is pretty darn impressive. The use trail to Magee was one thing but I was interested to see a few spots of trail building from back in the day on the way to the top of Crater Pk.

Irresistible Revisit to the Magee TH
After four years away, I couldn't resist the easy access in late December. Coming in from Ashpan, the roads had sections of snow and ice, especially close to the trailhead. Logging was still active, especially near Ashpan. The trailhead road had two downed trees blocking it after the first big turnaround/parking area, adding less than half a mile to the hike each way. The trail itself seems to have only a few downed trees across it compared to the slew of downed trees that added to the adventure of my previous visits. The snow on the trail was shallow and patchy much of the way up, but slick in many places. Around 8000 feet, the snow was over a foot deep and ranged from 2-3 feet deep at the rim. Many areas above tree line had a slick layer of ice, requiring careful stepping and route choice being that I was only wearing hiking boots. It was a clear day with no wind until light winds cooled me upon reaching the crater rim. There was a snow/ice free band on the top inner edge of the rim, making the walk over to Crater peak much more managable than it would have otherwise been. The hike from TH to Crater Peak and back took longer than in the past in these conditions--6 hours (photos, summit registers, sitting a bit at the top included). The drive took much longer than usual too, but it was a beautiful day and a great way to spend a day in early winter under fall conditions.

Double Peak Day
Backpacked from Cypress to Everett Lake. Left the guys behind so they could drink beer and fish - I bagged two peaks. Wish I hadn't waited until later to go - would have liked to have gotten the other ones up here too.

fun rim traverse
traversed most of the crater rim to get to the Crater Pk summit. A marmot was sitting at the top before I arrived, enjoying the view. Pretty cool panorama from the highpoint of Lassen National Forest and Thousand Lakes Wilderness. Great dayhike via Cow Creek & Magee Trailhead.

Thanksgiving Hike
An extended dry, warm season tempted me to choose a higher destination than would normally be easily accessed as I continued my recent tradition of a holiday adventure. I left my parents place in Redding around 8:30 to venture to the Magee trailhead. I summited Magee Peak and then braved extreme windchill along the rim of the crater to make it up Crater Peak. Snow was only ankle deep at the top and was powdery enough that my feet stayed dry in my trail runners. The sky was crystal clear, allowing for amazing views in all directions of all the major California mountains not obscured by the dominant views of Lassen and Shasta. It only took me 1 hr 15 min. at a fast pace to get to Magee Peak via the Magee trail, but the hike over to Crater Peak along with trail registers, photos, and taking in the views adds about an hour to the round trip. Total hike time car to car was a fast paced 4 hours, so I made it back to Redding by 3:30, in plenty of time for the feast.

Magee Trail
I enjoyed a beautiful, but toasty hike with temps in the upper 80s at the beginning of a heatwave. Luckily there was lots of shade until the upper elevations and several snow patches inside the crater rim for the dogs to cool off in. I signed the summit resgister at Magee Peak before following the crater rim over to Crater Peak. Great views and lots of flying ants!
