Water Quality

Great article, highly informative. Well researched.

When the snow the algae is on gets into the water, presumably the algae and toxic bacterial friends eating it get carried away with it. I wonder what kind of effect watermellon snow has on water quality?

Re: Water Quality

That is a good question. I will try to remember to research for an answer. It could be that perculation through groundcover might filter it out, but I am not certain at this time.

Watermelon or Strawberry Snow

When I was young, an older hiker told me he had eaten pink snow for over 30 years and it was safe. I tried it in small quantities and found it tasted like a weak watermelon or strawberry taste. I have done this for over 50 years occasionally hiking at high altitudes with no ill effects. A few other people who tried this have never had ill effects as far as I've seen. A very good article here - and I probably wouldn't recommend eating large quantities, but small tastes shouldn't harm you.

Re: Watermelon or Strawberry Snow

I have never had a problem (yet), either. But some people have very bad reactions to it.
