"As an adolescent I aspired to lasting fame, I craved factual certainty, and I thirsted for a meaningful vision of human life - so I became a scientist. This is like becoming an archbishop so you can meet girls."

Untitled CommentSterling Hiker,
That is pretty much what I said. As backcountry usage increases more and more permits are required. You can still enter the park and climb Gregory Bald without a fee or permit. Check with the number that is listed for the most updated info.

Untitled CommentThe Park Service requires that you fill out a backcountry permit for any overnight stay at any of the park's backcountry campsites. In addition, there are certain sites, such as #13 Sheep Pen Gap, that are rationed and therefore require a reservation.

Bring Money!Permits are required for overnight stays in the park, and you must stay in a designated campsite. There is now a fee for the permits. Check with the ranger station for the current cost, as they seem to keep increasing the cost of these permits Those sites with a usage limit will require you to have a reservation number if space is available. It is best to contact the park service for the latest requirements.

Parson Branch RoadThe road will remain closed through 2005, but there is hope that it will be re-opened in the future. The road was opened but shortly after heavy rains washed it out. As of July 2019 there are no plans to reopen the road.

Untitled CommentThe most beautiful time of the year for Gregory is the middle of June. The flame azaleas are just knockout, pick your color and it is there. I am no flower buff but I love the color and the beauty that they lend to the great pleasure of a 'walk in the woods'.
