Lower portion of the Whitney Glacier route

Lower portion of the Whitney Glacier route

For obvious reasons, it is best to stay in the center of the glacier while on the lower part of the route. The rocks in the foreground came from the Whitney-Bolam ridge. Shastina on the right is also a plentiful source of rock fall. Although the details of the topography will change from year to year and depend of the time of year, the general idea is to pass the ice fall in the foreground until it is possible to head over towards the dirty ice fall on the left. We thread the needle between the ugly ice and the Bergschrund extending left from the Shata-Shastina saddle. June 24, 2006.
