This was probably my second favorite mountain (next to Strawberry) when I lived in LA. Did the ski hut trail quite a few times - the bowl was always a nice snow climb.

Thin Cover
Skinned to summit from near the new Baldy Bowl Trail sign (at the major switchback heading toward the ridge, 1/3 mile above the hut). Coverage was thin, but the snow was much more consolidated than I expected. Not enough to ski the bowl, so skiied the trees along the trail. Lots of people out enjoying the day.

Ski Hut Trail
Great hike so close to LA. Who knew? I guess a lot of people know.
Hiked/skied Baldy several times each year since I moved to LA in 1996. Usual route is Baldy Bowl, but have ascended Register Ridge, Devil's Backbone and Bear Canyon as well. Skied the North side a few times, too.

This ridge route is a tough, tough route. Picked it up by the Ski Hut Trail sign-in register. Steep, steep, steep. Encountered some knee deep snow. Followed the ridge to the saddle between Harwood and Baldy and then up the south face to the summit. Returned via the Bowl and Ski Hut Trail.

This was a wonderful snow climb. Just as we began our ascent of the bowl, we were witness to the helicopter rescue of a climber who had tumbled down some portion of it and injured himself. We summitted at 12:35 pm and were back down to Manker Flat by 3:20.

A sunny day with little wind up until the summit. Unfortunately there wasn't much snow to use our crampons. My first climb was definitely rewarded with a wonderful view from the summit.

Amazing Weather! Sunny and clear blue skies. Little ice and snow coverage. Was joined on the sumit by about 10 members of a Korean Alpine Club. From Truck to summit to truck was 5 hours.

A glorious day for a summit of Baldy and West Baldy. The winds were howling and the top was cold, but this made for an exhilarating ambience. Crampons were necessary above the ski hut.
Route Climbed: Baldy Bowl Trail Date Climbed: 1/22/2006
Started out saturday (1/21/2006), took the baldy bowl trail. The trail was clear of snow and ice until shortly after the ski hut. As soon as the rocky section begins (where you're travelling west along the base of the bowl), it starts to get icy. Crampons required from here on, pretty much all the way to the top. There is a span of about a quarter mile after the trail reaches the ridge of the bowl and turns north that does not have enough ice to use your crampons but that's it. We ended up camping around the area where the trail meets the ridge of the bowl. We summited Baldy on Sunday (1/22/2006) morning, very cold and windy at the top, but that was already expected. Headed back down the same way. This was my third summit of Baldy, but the first time in the winter. This is an awesome peak.

Nice, steep route. Very warm day for January. No wind. Climbed the ridge all the way to the summit of Mt. Harwood. Then walked over to the saddle between Baldy and Harwood, put on cramp-ons and continued on to the summit of Baldy. Returned via Baldy Bowl and Ski Hut Trail. Had the hills to myself, didn't see a single soul the entire day.

The day started out very nice but a bit cold. My first hike since August and it felt great to be back out there. The cloud layer hung around the top as we neared the peak. The closer we got to the top the colder it got. When we reached the summit my temperature gage read 31 degrees. And with the strong wind it felt more like 25 degrees. We took some quick photos on the top and got out of there. But over all it was a great hike and I look forward to getting back out there when there’s some more snow.

What a hike! The day started out rainy, windy, and cold. By the time we got to the ski hut the clouds had broken and it felt like spring. The summit was bitterly cold and windy. It had to be in the single digits or less. We finished in the dark and grabbed a frosty brew and a burger to round out the day. One helluva day, my legs still hurt!
I have climbed this mountain 3 times. The first time I climbed rock in the 5.6 range along the waterfall to gain the upper part of the creek. I then hiked the creek for a long time before cutting over and finding the hut. I then climbed scree slope and connected with the ridge. It was a long day.
The second time I summited in the winter and snow boarded back down.
The 3rd time was the very next day when I went looking for my lost keys and cell phone. I didn't find them.

Nice hike. My fiancee, Mandy, and I got a super view at 8,800 feet and tinkered with the idea of taking another hour to tag the summit, but decided to keep it simple and relaxing and leave the top for another day. It was our first big climb together and her first trip up that high. We're looking forward to many hikes together in the future!
