Great fun
Went in Feb and May 2006 too, winter ascent = not so easy. Great fun scrambling to the top, was quite windy tho. Fire road makes for an easy descent. Will certainly go again.

Snowy
First time out. 2 inches of snow above 2000 ft. Spent a lot of time wiping off rocks to find the blazes. Some dodgy moments on transition holds or when chinning. Several chimneys required some thought on how to ascend. Good amount of crab-walking, sliding, and crawling when down climbing. Take care if icy! After 3rd false summit, easy going. Fire road return is a long slog - better option may be to bushwack along Hughes River. 5 and a half hours. Lots of animal tracks. Hawks soaring in and around the rocks. Very quiet. Awesome mountain.

Best trail around
Love this trail. Can't get enough. Did the loop once and did an up and back. Up and back is the way to go. That fire road felt like it would never end.
Often do this to keep in shape. Probably have done it about a dozen times or so. It fun to make up your own route near the top.

Fun Climb
Did it first on Oct. 6, 2007. This was a fun scramble to the top. The views were blocked by fog and haze. Still, a fun hike. Did it a second time with my girlfriend and the views were much better this time.

Ridge Trail/Fire Road Loop
The scramble up the Ridge Trail = FUN! We had perfect weather and wildflowers were out in full bloom...great day! Lots of pics of the 8.8 mile trek on our website Natural Born Hikers Enjoy!

Ridge Trail up, Forest Road Down
Climbed with SMBC youth group w/ 12 people. Awesome day w/ perfect weather, saw big black bear up close near the summit. Third time climbing Old Rag, loved it just as much as ever!

No Crowds
Woke up at 3:00 AM and drove out to Old Rag. Great hike, no one else there at all until I was almost down. Took the Ridge Trail up, then down the other side along the Weakley Hollow Fire Road. The rock scrambling was especailly fun and I got off the "trail" a few times up top, had a lot of fun. Took me 5:45, but I took a gazillion pictures and several long stops to enjoy the morning too :)
NOTE: There is an $8.00 fee PER PERSON from March-November, and $5.00 from December-February. I think the rates got hiked just this year.
climbed too many times to count....use old rag for training ...from skyline drive, run down white oak canyon to old rag.....run up old rag....back down and then up to my car on skyline drive via whiteoak....fun, fun, fun.....(and you also get to blow past the 85,000,000 other folks)
I first got hooked on hiking and mountains by doing Old Rag (in 1980). I've done it at least a couple dozen times since and it is still one of my favorites.

Best Hike I ve Found in VA
First time at Old Rag hiked the loop and really enjoyed it. Did it a second time on 1/2/07 this time went back through the bouldering portion instead of doing the loop. That rock scramble is just to fun. Next time will do the White Oaks Canyon hike to the top.

a cold and windy day, but very clear and well worth the effort. In fact, this summit alone made our 6-day trip worth it. Though it was cold, we stayed on top for a long lunch break to watch some Aussie-style rappellers and to do some bouldering of our own.

Best of the ParkI came out here a lot while living in Baltimore. There's tons of places to escape the crowds, scramble and enjoy the views.

Fun hike! This has to be one of the most fun hikes in the Mid-Atlantic states. Plus it's usually a good place to see bears.

Great memoriesClimbed Old Rag a few times as a Scout growing up. I remember it as a tough, yet fun, dayhike. I loved the rock scrambling portions...
