Description

I recently attempted Mt Rainier, and was unable to summit. I was in a guided group of 29-34 yr olds. I simply could not keep up with the pace. I was 57 yrs old. The pace was absolutely the correct pace for the conditions and the circumstance, and I was simply unable to keep up with the group.

Although in relatively good shape for my age, I discovered the mountain really doesn't care how old you are. The wind blows the same for everyone.

Although the pace was correct, under different circumstances, I think I would have had more success if I could have taken a slower pace. My problem is that the pace is set by a group of typically much younger people, who are also in pretty good shape, and so I tend to fall behind.

I am looking for an older group to set up a "custom climb" based on an age and ability criteria. I do not have the experience, so I would prefer a guided trip. My experience is many Mt Washington N.H Summer climbs, some guided ice climbing, and my 3 day experience on Mt Rainier. I am a long term planner, so location and time is completely up in the air.

I realize of course that there are many people my age who can keep up with 20 year olds. Unfortunately, I am not one of them, and I hate to compromise the chances of a group.

Are there any like minded people around with similar criteria for a climb.

hello
i live in N Calif. 63 years old. Still going to mtns. Backpacking, peakbagging, low-rent technical climbing. Lots to do in the Sierra. I don't think I'm up for Rainier - snow slog just doesn't interest me, however, I do try to stay in shape and am open to various adventures.

Hi Tom,
Certainly would like to visit and climb in your part. If I am ever in the area, and it is quite probable I will be at some time, I will give you a shout. Be well and Regards, Richard

Is this for 2013 summer or have you already gone again? Older and wiser sounds right up my alley, Tom! I'm 18 but used to hiking with my grandpa, and am more interested in learning from an experienced climber than sprinting up the mountain. I can follow any pace, I just want to make it to the top to start off my climbing resume. Also, at 6'7" 200lbs I have been known to be a pack mule and can carry my gear and more without a problem. I read "Freedom of the Hills" religiously and have most of the basic experience down, just no big ascents. Take it easy! Justin
