Very cold early start. Freezing winds on the summit but the outstanding views compensated. Lassen was clearly visible as were hundreds of other Great Basin peaks. Great day in the desert.

South Side
We car camped at the 5200' level and made our way up a prominent ridgeline that worked well for us. My companion was Richard Carey from San Diego but while we had good luck on other peaks during the week with the heat aspect, we found the temp at about 90 degrees when we got back down. We had poor views from the summit due to smoke in the area and all we could see of Pyramid Lake was a ghostly pyramid. With the heat going up, our plans for another peak in the area went away and we headed home. Great week for Richard with 11 p2ks and I added 8.

Great View of Pyramid
Came up through Upper Scott Springs. Observed AT LEAST 80 Pronghorn or more near the reservoir on the way up. The last 1000 feet to the ridgeline is very rocky with brush. Great 360 views, including Pyramid Lake.

Initially planned from north via big canyon but...
It's a good thing I left Reno as early as I did... I initially planned on hiking in from the north via big canyon to tag Bristol Peak and Tule Peak as I hiked the length of the ridge. Buuuut... Due to private property in the canyon (Big Canyon Ranch), I had to turn around and decided to do the southern approach as explained above. Alas, no map, no clue where to go (reading this page I now know I didn't start where most people do), and two jonsing pups I made my way to the summit by adding an additional two miles (round trip) and ~400ft. The views from the peak, however, made up for the disappointment in not being able to summit the way intended. Definitely makes things more adventurous with no map or exact clue where you're going! :)

Too much snow to find register, "post-holing" the last two miles to the summit was terrible. Just under 5 hours car to car, with Mac

Hiked with Al and Collin. Nice hike on a beautiful day. Pyramid Lake had a beautiful blue color. Easy route to follow to the summit.

Great hike. Saw some pronghorn in the area of Cowboy Springs. Cold and windy on top. Didn't find a register on top, but may have been under the snow and ice.
Very windy. Beautiful clouds and views. Should've brought gloves though. Started raining just after I returned to the TH, which turned into a snow flurry which resulted in snow all the way down to Reno.

Cowboy Springs Rib
Already a foot of snow in places as I approached the summit. Beautiful day, clear and comfortable. Summit views northwest to Mount Lassen, south to Mount Grant. Couldn't find the register on the summit, maybe because it was buried in snow.
We ended up parking next to the creek crossing rather than risk getting stuck by crossing it (this cost us about 40 minutes going in) We followed the cowboy rib description which aside from the time expectation was awesome. Cold and windy on top but great view, caught just the slightest touch of a shower on the way down. Our accent was easily over an hour and a half longer than expected, we took almost 4 from the car to the summit. We were the 2nd group to summit this year. Most claims according to the log were close to the 3 hour range, so remember to overprepare gang, its better than getting stuck. All in all a good notice that I have a lot of improvement ahead of me haha.

Climbed in a fast afternoon with bearbnz as a "keep-in-shape" peak. The Sierra Club must have driven up here to put their obligatory "highest point" register in the bottle.......the original was placed by a local rancher.

Cowboy Springs Rib
Climbed with ScottyS via the Cowboy Springs Rib, 3,700' of elevation gain in about 3.5 miles, taking 1:50 to the summit, and 1:05 back to the car. Very chilly on top, winds gusting as high as 35-40 knots, lots of snow in the shade and on the lee side of the summit.

WRR via Cove Springs RoadMisjudged the route beta and started a bit short of the usual north leading spur road. This didn't end up adding anything to the distance.
Followed the ranch/mining roads all the way to Cove Springs and then took the established stock trails from there up to the ridgeline.
Spotted horses on the ascent and a herd of a dozen or so pronghorn on the descent.
Pics and commentary (and route tracks) are here.

Route: CSRClimbed with shaggyp and another friend, regret making it a late morning start -- made it back to the car as the sun set.
Descent was not much faster than ascent, due to the steeper sections - lots of sliding.
The weather was not on our side, but all in all it was a great hike with good friends.
