By the way I think I figured out what the peak I was asking you about is. It is probably Peak 12553 ft (see map) south of Savage Peak. I don't know why for a while I was sure it was Whitney.
Having been there recently, I will defer to your judgement. Also, as I recall now, I don't think you can see Savage Peak from the road because of altitude, so you're probably right. I was there last year ad I don't recall seeing Savage from that far below timberline.
