"Got tight last night on absinthe and did knife tricks. Great success shooting the knife into the piano. The woodworms are so bad and eat hell out of all furniture that you can always claim the woodworms did it."

A windy summitAll towns need a summit near their centre. A fine walk up to a windy top with a fine view of Edinburgh and beyond.

Run upLived in Edinburgh for a couple years just before I got into running (and summiting things). On a return trip to Edinburgh, finally bagged this one in 2015.

Arthur's SeatI hiked this my family right after we arrived in Edinburgh. It was a nice diversion from the city. The views from the top highlighted both Edinburgh and the ocean.

Urban oasisWhat a spectacular urban oasis! Walked from the hotel for a great all day circuit including Arthur's Seat, Calton Hill and Edinburgh Castle...never mind a lot of peaty whiskey, haggis and ale! Beautiful clear day, amazing views of the harbor and historic Edinborough.

Great viewsThis started out as a city hike to help out with the jet lag and to check out Edinburgh and ended up tagging Arthur's Seat. 40+ MPH winds at the summit and temps in the 50 degree range made it hard to even stand up but we enjoyed the peak with 50+ other folks.

Morning DelightI spent two months living at the base of Salisbury Crags and Arthur's Seat on East Parkside and loved waking up to the view every morning. I made a point of summitting Arthur's Seat at least once a week while I was in Edinburgh. If you're in the city, you can't find a better view of the surrounding area.

Walk, don't runWhen I visited Edinburgh as a buff university athlete, I assured my Scottish uncle that I would run up Arthur's Seat. He cheerily dropped me off along the base, and I began to run straight up the side. It took about 30 seconds for me to realise this was completely unsustainable, but I looked behind to see my uncle had, maddeningly, decided to observe my progress. As a matter of pride I had to keep running until I could get out of sight, which took several of the longest, most painful minutes of my life.

educationalHiked this on a University trip to Scotland! Pondered many things on the summit. Let geography and geology flow together. Now I see it as a symbolic marker of change in my life at the time.

Wee oneI climbed this as a very small child many times. Maybe the first mountain I went up entirely uner my own power? I may never know.

urban adventureAscent timed to celebrate my 31st birthday which happened to be suitably clear to offer us a splendid view. Wife strangely opted for a very direct route down to the southwest and then began to panic on the somewhat foolish scramble down!
