SNEAKY SNAKE

SNEAKY SNAKE

"Well, Sneaky Snake drinks root beer, and he just makes me sick ... When he is not dancin', he looks just like a stick. Now, he doesn't have any arms or legs, you cannot see his ears; And while we're not lookin', he's stealin' ALL OUR BEER ..." This "sneaky snake" is an Arizona Black Rattlesnake; the color of root beer and a member of the venomous Pit Viper family. It can change color as it moves effortlessly across uneven mountain terrain. This one was found near a Mingus Mountain road at 7,600'. Note the characteristic wedge-shaped head, where the retractable fang action operates upon available prey such as rodents, birds and centipedes. August 13, 2013

Bbrrrruu ... hahahahahahahaha ....

I'm not a snake expert or even a snake charmer, but in American forests I rely
(intensely) upon my 'instant Karma" to
negotiate bad beasts in the Woods. ;- )

I met Little Red Riding Hood the other day ...

A few years ago...

I saw a timber rattler here in NC that was almost that dark. It was on the flanks of Unaka Mountain well above 4500 feet. If not for my wife hearing the slight buzz of its rattle (it had lost most of its rattles), there's a good possibility I'd have stepped on or near it.

Re: A few years ago...

Both snakes are in the same Family of Pit Vipers ...

Interesting you should mention the Timber rattler ... makes me wonder how many people
actually "encountered" venonous snakes
during the Westward Expansion of the 1800's.

Sneaky Snake Fast Fact:

"Timber rattlers have a unique place in American history as well. It is the snake featured on early flags of the American Revolution, such as the "Don't Tread On Me" flag of the first Continental Navy."
