Overview
The Chihuahuan Desert is the largest North American desert, covering about 175,000 square miles. This desert region encompasses portions of southeastern Arizona, southern and central New Mexico, and west Texas, however, the majority of the desert is located in Mexico, stretching south to Zacatecas. One of the more prominent features of this desert is the numerous mountain ranges separated by valleys (bolsons) throughout the region. The San Andres and Doña Ana Mountains in New Mexico and the Franklin Mountains in Texas are some good examples.Wildlife in the Chihuahuan Desert include the mountain lion, bobcat, wolf, coyote, mule deer, white-tailed deer, gemsbok, antelope, ring-tailed cat, and many other smaller species. Many species of birds, reptiles and amphibians are prevalent.
