Devastation  Sucess!

Planned on hiking both Spitler and Apache Peak but we only got Apache. We took the Spitler Peak trail and it was evident that we were the only ones to have hiked this trail in a long while. The whole area was devastated by the fires. Its a shame

With Spitler  Sucess!

A fun day hike with gimpilator. The last part of Fobes Ranch rd to the trailhead is blocked by 3 large boulders because the road washed out and is now impassable for vehicles. It only adds about 0.5mi RT so no big deal. This area sees little traffic apparently; we were the second party since July. You can still smell the burn from the charred Manzanita.

Apache and Spitler  Sucess!

Took the Forbes trail up through the new burn. The slopes are washing away and the trail is now hard to follow in places after the fire. The heat melted the summit register canister but somehow the booklet inside was only slightly charred.

Winter climb  Sucess!

I was unprepared for how much snow there was, I kept loosing the trail and failed to find my way up Spitler. I turned around and made the summit of Apache. Beautiful views and lots of fog rolled in on the decent.

Didn't get to the top

First off, the directions to get to Apache Peak trailhead are pretty clear from the page, but I'll include some additional details so you don't run into the same problems I did! When you get off the road at Fobes Ranch Road and drive a bit (approximately a mile) you will notice that the road forks. You can either go left, which is uphill, or right which is flat. You want to go to the left, uphill. I recommend having some sort of 4-wheel drive because the road is rough at points. About 5 miles into the drive up, the road will fork again. This time there is a clear sign that indicates Fobes trail head is a 1/2 mile. Keep track of that half mile and keep your eyes peeled for a trail head that is about 15 feet from the edge of the road. If you drive past the trail head, you will come to a locked fence and then you'll have to reverse down the treacherous road. Did that today and it was a lot like Indiana Jones at Disneyland in reverse. Anyway, the easiest way to point out the trail head is by mileage and noting that the road makes a 90 degree turn where you can park.

When I woke up today, I did not plan on doing a fun hike...which meant that I didn't get to the trail head until around 3pm. The trail is pretty straight forward once you get there. There was nice scenery and it's pretty exciting when you make it to the Pacific Crest Trail (lower saddle) because there are 360 degree views of the desert as well as Garner Valley. Ultimately, I only ended up making it to the upper saddle (took an hour and 20 minutes to get there... I know, I'm slow ;) ) because the sun was setting and it was starting to get very cold. If you do this hike in the winter like I did, I recommend dressing in layers, bringing some sort of ear-warmer (hood works fine) and wearing a wind-breaker (once you get to the PCT it is WINDY).

Antsell and Apache  Sucess!

Hiked Antsell and Apache from the Apple Canyon trailhead. This was a long, hard, hot, dry day. Antsell looks great from Tahquitz, and is a fun little scramble on slabs. Apache is just like the other peaks on the Desert Divide.

With Spitler Peak  Sucess!

Came up the Spitler Peak Trail and bagged Apache Peak first. Nice views form Spitler but Apache Peak's vistas were much better. Another awesome day in the San Jacinto Wilderness!

Desert Divide  Sucess!

One of the peaks we bagged while approaching from the Fobes trail and leaving from the Devil's Slide. Not a bad approach and a nice view, a bit windy.

Easy Tag  Sucess!

Apart from the laughable Palm View Peak this is the easiest 'tag' along the Desert Divide from the PCT. Views are MUCH better though.

Desert Divide - North  Sucess!

Anti-climatic ascent after Anstell Rock for the sixth of 7 peaks. We were toast in terms of daylight and knew that a bailout plan would be required (without our planned bailout vehicle in place). With Bob Burd.

How!!  Sucess!

Deb and I were on our way to Antsell Peak and tagged this one in the name of the dead dog we passed along the way. Boo hoo! Did I mention it was God awful windy (gusts to 50 mph!!)??

This was the fun part!  Sucess!

It was a beautiful day in the wilderness. Hiked up PCT to "Apache Col" and meandered to the summit. Deb and I had a great time taking in the awesome views of the desert and even Baldy was visible from the summit.

Apache Peak  Sucess!

Most beautiful day to be in the San Jacinto Wilderness! We had a bit of wind on summits but otherwise very temperate and clear. Tagged the true summit of Apache (where the summit register is) and Spitler Peak today... the eve of Christmas Eve. Had a blast with Blair, as usual!
