Not uniqueI wouldn't say that is unique. To some degree, this type of thing happens all over the world--even here in the Pacific Northwest (though it's not ordinarily desert on the dry side here but less-vegetated terrain--at least west of the Cascade Crest).

Sun is the reasonThe side that has only shrubs and grasses on it is a south facing slope and gets more direct sunlight on it throughout the year. The north facing slope sees much less direct rays of sunlight and is a little bit cooler, allowing trees to grow.
