Dan ...

There's been some talk here on SP on how some
of these Quaking aspen are dying off in large
numbers. What's your opinion? Do you think that elk overgrazing has anything to do with it,or is it just a cyclic phrase that these trees are going through?

On your outings, do you see any wildlife or
wildlife biologists out looking for elk??

Your photo reminded me. I need to go up to
Flagstaff & check out the health of the
Quaking aspen up there! Thanks, Dan.

Re: Dan ...

It is my honest opinion that the Aspen in CO are pretty healthy. Everywhere I have been there seems to be good stands. That being said, when they do start to 'bite the dust' they go in large numbers. This is namely due to the face that the entire grove is actually one plant, (with a shallow root system.) So if one gets a disease, it will affect the rest of them.

I seem to remember in AP Biology that these plants tend to occupy areas after fires or major disasters (like an avalanche.) Once the area stabilizes the evergreens take over.

Have fun at Flagstaff.

Dan
