Via Valley Hot springs trail and then off trail in a snow. Long day with breaking the trail in a fresh deep snow.

West ridge with Pt 13,123B
I guess the typical west-side outing -- up the Hot Springs trail to the west ridge of Cottonwood, over to Pt 13,123B (with gathering storm clouds on a 60% chance day), and down the Garner Creek trail. I re-sprained my ankle about 2 miles before getting back to the car, otherwise a great hike!

West ridge
A quick half-day beating a gloomy forecast. A few slush-drifts below treeline, then nicely wind-packed snow on the ridge. I would have continued on the loop south had I been able to see any of it from the summit. Trip report.
My dad was in town visiting for a few days so we decided to take a road trip and explore the San Luis Valley. The first night we stayed at the Valley View Hot Springs, and the next day I got up early and climbed Cottonwood from the cabin. It took about 7 hours and was a nice solo outing with great views. Memorable weekend for me.

Hot Springs/Garner Trail
Hiked in Hot Springs trail and up the West Ridge of Cottonwood. I continued in good weather over Pt 13,123 and pressed on to Thirsty Peak. Thirsty marked a milestone for the year being the 75th summit attained since the first of the year. After Thirsty Peak, I cruised over to Lakes Peak, down the west ridge to the saddle and into and out the Garner Trail back to my truck and a cold Dale's Pale Ale. I ran into Rick on the trail and had some great conversations early in the morning and late in the day.

Excellent early season climb! I realy enjoyed this mountain even though I was chased off the summit by hail. Eagle Peak to the east is still on my to do list. Hot Springs Canyon is an intimate introduction to the norther Sanges (although not as sweet as the Wild Cherry Creek drainage). My main complaint about Cottonwood is it isn't composed of Crestone Conglomerate. It is a most excellent mountain though!
