Yes, very dangerousAccording to one of my books on mountaineering (the good old "Meine Berge" by Luis Trenker, inherited from my father) one is in mortal danger when something like that happens. My wife and I both experienced it on the flat summit of Sass Pordoi, seconds after there was a stroke of lightning less than 50 meters (150 ft.) away, in a cable car station that probably saved us.

Deja VuI've had that happen a few times in my travels. When you can smell the ozone and feel the buzz, it's time to boogie!

My hair...... usually stands up like that every time I'm in a thunderstorm above timberline. In my case, however, it's due to fear- not static electricity ;-).
What an amazing shot!

Electric hairvery cool...i would have done the same...I've had a few friends advise me of lighting strikes on mountains especially their summits. Nothing like that, with the hair thing. Sometimes it may strike without any warning..I would like to know how long was that feeling or did someone just say shit look at you..somethings up here...kinda weird weather going on here..

Re: Electric hairI did not realize my hair was standing up until I checked the photo at home. I do most of the peaks solo, more time efficient and also a lot more challenging (I do carry SPOT with me). Just wanted to take quickly a few photos while thinking what will be the best way to get down b/c car was in the direction of a long ridge hike (cca 07 miles along an exposed ridge) and then the hike was more protected. I dropped well below the ridge and walked on scree below - harder terrain, but slightly safer...

Great shot!Happy that you are safe. I experienced that only once and we rushed down the ridge of Igl Compass like a hell. Yet we were wet at the end.
Cheers!

" The Queen of Fate ""The Queen of Fate by the outer Gate,
Her carriage to Nowhere, still await.
Her cloak is wrapped against the night,
Her eyes are wide with peculiar fright.
Gray horses eyes turn back in fear,
With thunderclaps upon her ear.
Blue jagged lightning points the way,
Along the path .... to yesterday."
