Khazali Canyon, a wonderful place, but....

Wadi Rum, a truly magical place!
Unfortunately, the Khazali Canyon brings me back to a very bad time going back to the October 1991. One day we walked from the Rest House to the Khazali Canyon and in the late afternoon we pitched our tent right near the exit of the canyon, on the opposite side of this photo. We were only two people, because our friends had preferred to stay overnight in the Rest House. When it began to get dark, we saw in the distance an off-road vehicle that began to approach and a certain sixth sense led us to abandon the tent and flee in the dark in the opposite direction to that of the off-road vehicle.
We had seen right! They were looking just for us! Arriving at the tent, they saw no one and immediately began to go far and wide in the desert to find us. But we ran in the dark without the head torch and took cover behind a hill. Until the off-roader finally drove away.!

Re: Khazali Canyon, a wonderful place, but....

Hi Silvia,
Yes, that does sound disturbing. Strangely enough, before we left for Jordan, a friend told us she had nearly been run over by an off road vehicle in a camp at Wadi Rum in the middle of the night. Also, our group was awoken in the early hours of the morning by vehicles passing close to our camp. Our group leader passed it off as a normal event so perhaps this sort of behaviour is common.
I did find it a beautiful place and I would have liked to have stayed longer and perhaps tried some of the scrambles or easier rock climbs but we were on a schedule and had to move on.
Hope you are enjoying this winter,
Mike

Thank you, I hope this winter i will enjoy Tenerife, where there are several climbing areas and peak tours, a destination which I hope will be relaxing. I am just leaving next week!
Yes, Wadi Rum is gorgeous. We managed to climb a couple of towers on that trip, but no more. We too had little time available, furthermore it must be said that in Wadi Rum the quality of the rock, I think it is sandstone, is not exceptional.
Good mountain to you, too.
Silvia

Hope you enjoy Tenerife. We did some walking there a few years ago.
We are off to La Palma in February. The Canary Islands are great in Winter.
