Summer days at Fort Rock
This is a cool land mark in Oregon. Just found out Fork Rock is a volcano after all these years. The rock literally looks like a fort and heard "rumors" it has been used as one in the past but not sure. My brothers and I hiked all the way up to the cliffs. They are at least a few hundred feet high. Made the drive worthwhile.
Lots of walking /scrambling options. Checkout the predator "trash piles" under raptor perches and nests below some of the higher cliffs. Something ironic about the rattlesnake skulls among the remains of their prey animals. For those who look at something other than their own route, an excellent mixture of birds, flowers and geology in spring. Last time was the last year Cabin Lake CG had toilets. 2005?

A nice cold day for exploring
Fort Rock was a hot topic in my Geology of Oregon classes, so I finally made it out here and had a chance to explore the site. This is another wholely unique area of Oregon I am grateful to have seen, the trip was well worth while, and the scrambling around the caldera walls was a blast.

Killing me softly on Fort Rock1 hour car to car, this is the best extrusive rock I've ever scrambled, I would consider a free solo from the desert floor!
