Granite Chief  Sucess!

Not enough snow at squaw to make skiing worthwhile, so hiked up Granite Chief instead. Some snow cover along the PCT but trail was easy to follow. Great weather and views at the top.

Kicked to the curb

Didn't intend on Granite Chief trail...started thinking I was going up Shirley. Figured out my mistake and pressed anyway without a map or plan. Made it about 3.5 miles up (GPS wasn't cooperating either) and lost the trail on the rocks. The cairn markings are really poor. Anyway, figured that being lost, tired and stupid is no way to go through life. Found a pretty knoll, declared victory, ate a sandwich and went down.

Unintended loop  Sucess!

I did this as a solo hike. Was not familiar with Squaw Valley so I was never quite sure what I was aiming for. Granite Chief Trail is tough to follow as there are a number of little offshoot trails (and everyone I met said they screwed it up too). I ended up going up the Shirley Lake Canyon by accident but found my way to Emigrant Pass and up Granite Chief. Back on track and descended via Granite Chief Trail. Much adventure for a simple day hike due to my route finding error. Amazing views made it all worthwhile!!!

Long but pretty

This was a long hike, but a very pretty one. It was late in the season, so no snow was to be found anywhere.
