Overview

A totally off-the-grid canyon system with interesting rock formations, crenulated cliffs, mazes of side and slot canyons. Watch for rocky mountain sheep on the high bluffs.

Getting There

Take Bear Mountain Road heading northwest from Silver City, New Mexico. (See external link for the parking coordinates on Bear Mountain Road)

Red Tape

I did not encounter any but I'm not sure. The main "YL Canyon" section (see external link at bottom) and recommended parking location on Bear Mountain Road appear to be on BLM land. However, portions of the YL canyon system and others to the Northwest (and Bear Creek area) are within state lands (some wildlife management with questionable access). Some of the southern (lower-relief canyon) portions of the area are on private land (watch for barbed-wire fenced-off areas).

Camping

Should be careful to avoid flash flooding areas and stay within BLM lands
