That looks like...a long and steep ice pitch! How hard is it to find rest spots to put in screws? Nice job, great photo.

COOLFreakin amazing picture! Makes me want to grab my tools and get up to Lee Vining. Great color contrast too, the red and the black against the white/blue ice, very cool.

Nice shotAltough it seems like a slightly rotated photo I liked it so much. Thanks for posting.

Re: Nice shotUsually it's not a point of rotation... The most important for fotografer is - to make the distance from the ice surfers as much is it's possible. In this case the shot looks more real - you feel verticality. And usually it's not importatnt too much the angle of rotation... Almost vertical ice - about 80-85 degrees - looks always vertical...

Re: Nice shotYes, you are right. I understand better what do you mean after seeing other images of the same icefall.

BeautifulI don't want to ruin the magic but I'd like to know who took the shot and where they were in relation to the climber.

Re: BeautifulYou will be surprise, when I tell, that took this shot and of course the climber was my friend, who did all I asked him to do.
Th procedure of doing this photo is very "simple". You should undertand, what you are doing and that you will spent a few hours in order to do just one shot.
First the climber makes first run climb up and fixing a rope, descent down. Then photografer, using fixed rope climb up to the last ice-screw and fix himself on it. Un fix a rope and through it down. Then, climber makes his climb up in second time, using already prepared ice-crew and make his HoliWood posing near to photograpfer, doing whatever photografer ask him to do - to show emotions, to make nice ice-axe positions and so on.
Photografer, being fixed with a rope, try to be outstand ice surfirs as much as he could, forming a shot and push camera bottom.
Climber makes ice-crew belay. Fix a rope. Photographer drop down, using fix rope and then climber makes his descent down...
You see- it's very easy and simple!!!

Re: BeautifulA well-deserved great shot in that case. Some of them come easier but it's always nice when the "hard" photos also turn out well!

Re: BeautifulI can see ice-climbing is no problem. I think I'll start tomorrow when the hangovers have gone. Greetings for an excellent photo no matter how it was done.
