Does it qualify as a HUT?

The SUNRISE Lodge was built in 1931 at the Sunrise area of Mount Rainier Nat'l Park. It was never fully completed. The building was originally planned as a large hotel, but due to financial difficulties only this section, a 1/4 of the original plan, was constructed to serve primarily as a cafeteria for park visitors and a dormitory for park employees. The building still functions as such today. Other than fire safety devices being installed and a few remodels to dorm rooms, the building's exterior and interior remain the same as when built in 1931. An interesting trail in the area is the Glacier Basin Trail. It leads to an area that was mined for copper at the turn of the last century. In 1902, a claim was established based upon ore samples valued at $450.00 per ton. Nothing of commercial value was ever found, and the mine closed in 1957. An old wagon road that has been rehabilitated into a trail passes the wreakage of a sawmill, powerplant and miner's bunkhouse. The trail continues from the basin toward 'Interglacier,' a popular climbing route rising out of the flowers and onto the Schurman-Emmons route of awesome Mount Rainier. When I took this photo, it was the 50th Anniversary of the completion of Sunrise Lodge! I just had to go in and receive my free hot dog and soft drink, something I had RELISHED since leaving Puyallup earlier that morning. This is the same day I hiked to the top of Burroughs Mountain, the remnant of a lava flow which filled an ancient canyon, and possibly the finest example of alpine vegatation in the Cascades. "Hey, check out that yellow Datsun with the conspicuous BROWN PAPER BAG on the ground next to it!!!" Photo taken August 10, 1981 - Here's a view of MOUNT RAINIER on that day!

Down memory lane...

It reminds me that around that time dozens of resorts were built and opened up all over the San Gabriel Mountains here in LA, too. It was the awakening of outdoor recreation at the time of major industrialization. People just craved to get out of the cities.

Nice pic. Thanks.

Re: not a problem...

I really MISS the "days gone by" part of the
equation! When I see these historic buildings,
I feel I'm goin' back in time. For me, it's
ALWAYS a much scarier prospect to ADVANCE
forward in time. What does 'advance' really mean??? ??? Thanks for commenting!

Funny thing

Larry, we did have a yellow Datsun about that time. But ours was not that model. That datsun of ours was as ugly a car ever made but it was cheap and got good gas mileage. And yes, we did take it up to Sunrise around 1978.

Re: Okay, Dean...

I'll delete that part out, so you'll be off
the hook. I like Datsuns, too! I drove a
Datsun in western Alaska, when the price of
fuel was $4.00 per gallon. It didn't surprise
me that most folks owned dog teams, snow
machines or Datsuns to get around in. : )
