Bull Snake at Beaver Creek [ Sizes: Orig | Large | Med | Small | Thumb ]
Bull Snake at Beaver Creek
Gopher or Bull Snake, Pituophis melanoleucus: Racer Family. 48-100".
Common resident of AZ. When molested,
mimics a rattlesnake, but is not poisonous.
Told from rattlesnakes by narrow, tapering
(not triangular) head and lack of rattles.

Mainly diurnal, these cold-blooded snakes
often change their activity patterns to
become nocturnal during the intense heat
of desert summers. They may be observed
sunning on the rocks or drawing heat from
the pavement during the day to ready
themselves for active nights.

Nice shot Larry. These snakes are very beautiful. I even petted one once on his head, but I don't like to hold them.
Cheers.

Anya, I didn't catch anything! The
snake acted like I wasn't even there.
It must be a Hollywood 'stunt' snake.

Mister Snake is a big boy. You folks are
way too kind. Shouldn't you be out
climbin' something? Thanks for visiting!:)

Beautiful catch, Larry. I have never seen one in the wild. I came across rattlers more than enough but never a bull snake. Cheers.

Thanks, Guido! In the 'book,' it says
there's (5) subspecies of this snake in
California alone. They're also called
Pine Snakes.

Actually, my wife spotted this snake
first! She beat me home, and at
the time we were 75 miles from home!!

Thank you, Ejnar! When I see these snakes

summer is right around the corner!
