MOUNTAINS ARE MYSTERIOUS DUE TO FOG AND MIST …

Misty Karkonosze...
Misty Śnieżka...
Foggy rocks...
Visible...

A lot of water droplets or small crystals of ice in the air decreases visibility. If it is reduced to less than 1 km, we called this phenomenon as “fog”. For visibility no less than 1 km, it is “mist”. Clouds lying on the mountains create very dense fog. Fog and mist depend on rain and snow precipitation as well as on a local source of moisture, like lakes, glaciers or peat bogs. Góry Izerskie, located a little westwards from Karkonosze, stop the moist air flowing from SW direction and, therefore, this area mostly is rainy and misty. Often, in the morning, in mountains fog rises and forms dense clouds which cover slopes. All the range of Karkonosze is sometimes overspread by a continuous carpet of clouds. From the Czech side, clouds move quickly along the southern slope of Śnieżka because of strong winds and they are settled on the summit. In dense fog, hikers appear as ghosts. In misty mountains we feel like in mysterious world. This feeling is enhanced when we observe in fog some strange and enlarged shadows.
It will be continued ...
From the summit ...
