Rarely pleasant

Beautiful shot Nelson! I think such hours when it is pleasant on the summit are rare. Most pleasant is when you get back to base camp alive :-)

Thanks a lot guys guys. Aleksandar, standing below that face was one of the times I've know I'm not really a mountaineer. Looking up there I just thought to myself, "No way!".

My thoughts would be exactly the same Nelson. Hiking to the foot of this amazing wall is rewarding enough. I guess that is why we are ordinary mortals :-)

Thanks very much for your comments on my photos, they are very much appreciated!

To get this shot I crawled out of a warm sleeping bag at 5:00AM, hiked 200 feet up the rubble of a moraine that was blocking part of the view, then tried to stay warm while waiting for sunlight to appear, keeping the camera batteries close to my body. Once the light appeared I quickly forgot about the cold.

This shot of Ama Dablam was taken at the same time in the opposite direction.

Yes, you are right.
A cornice broke on the summit ridge. Kukus had a second hand 8mm rope bought in Kathmandu, it also broke and one of the best mountaineers in history met his fate. He had climbed all the 14 8000ers (but Lhotse), by new routes or winter ascents. If he had made it on Lhotse, he had made them all in this way.
