Fun route, an excellent beginner glacier climb. My partner wasn't feelin' it, so I went solo from the top of the glacier. 4:10 to the summit from Sunrise Camp. Cut off the train coming up the South Side and was the first one to the summit that day by an hour.
i climbed this a couple years ago, then a year later. Mazama glacier and South Spur. South Spur is boring.

great 3 days on the peak! Had sunrise to ourselves. Bird Creek road opened on 23rd. Coming from east coast, we got lucky with that. Great route.

South Spur Solo
I made bivouac at Cold Springs last night after getting lost in the dark on the forest roads. Woke three hours later and got going at 3:45 am this morning. I was on the windy summit by 11 am and back to my motorcycle by 3:15 pm for the 250 mile drive home. Now I'm tired.

South Spur Route
This was my first Cascade Mountain. The weather on the approach was bad, snow, rain and wind. The top of the mountain was getting hammered. Saturday dawned clear and no wind, the day stayed great but the wind did pick up in the afternoon. I got a little sunburned but it was a great day!

Denied
We went up the South Spur during mid-week. Great weather on the approach, but incoming weather from the coast caused us to turn around around 10,600. It was raining at the high-camp (8100ft). Lots of folks up on the south side ... probably around 30. Great views of Helens & Hood.

South Spur
My brother and I climbed the South Spur over two days. The access road was snowed in so we had to hike and additional 6 miles just to reach the trailhead. This was a slog of a trip. 24 miles and 8000 vertical feet through some seriously deep snow. We had a blast though. We had clear skies on the summit and could easily see Rainier, Hood and Mt. Saint Helens. Glissading down Pikers Peak was a blast but we got rained on the last 6 miles out.

Bad weather on the south spur
The road is clear up to the trailhead, but the trail gets snowy a mile from the trailhead. Weather report was dodgy, but we took a shot anyway. At about 7000', whiteout conditions took over, and our tracks began to fill with snow. We headed down, not having a night to wait out the storm. This is a grudge peak now.

SO Close...
We came so very close to the summit but just didn't get it. The road isn't clear to Cold Springs yet but its getting close, so we had to walk the extra few miles. Made camp at about 7000'. We watched a couple thunder storms boil up. Left camp next day at 5am. Finally at 11:30am we got to the false summit. The weather the whole day was nice and right when we got to the false summit the clouds came in. Seeing that it was starting to get to white out conditions we turned around. About 10min later after getting pretty far down the weather became perfect again. Being to tired to walk up we continued down. Missed the tent and had to look for it and then packed up and headed for Morrison Creek. 4:45pm we reached the car after the grueling hike out. We came so close but we will have to return one day to get this one.

7000 vertical foot snowboard descent
Due to early season road closure I had to hike an extra 5 miles in. Ended up going nearly 10,000 vertical feet up in 10 miles in less than 24 hours, solo. Followed by the most memorable snowboard run of my life!! Ya shoulda been there....

South Spur again. Snow storm blew in and made visability horrible. We bailed out after weathering a restless night on the Lunch Counter. Fun time though. I found the experience to be a great reminder of how sudden a storm can change the dynamics of a climb, any time of year.

Long but fun climb. An early start put us on the summit before clouds rolled in. Felt bad for people still hiking up into the soup. Unfortunately the glissade track was too icy for a comfortable descent.
