I had plans to hike Half Dome but 100 degree heat drove me out of Yosemite Valley up to Tuolumne meadows. Mount Dana sounded like a good dayhike. The heat had been generating thunderstorms around 1 pm every afternoon so I started before 7 am, made the summit around 9:15, enjoyed a snack and the spectacular views before hurrying back down the trail reaching my car around noon or so. I was surprised by the number of hikers I saw heading up late in the morning. It seemed unlikely they would make it back down before the daily thunderstorms started. I guess Yosemite being a national park means you get a whole lot of hikers who don't really know what they're doing.

Standard Route
Trail from Yosemite east entrance is in good condition. Virtually no snow. Some class 2 scrambling but not for very long stretches.

Northwest Slope
From Tioga Pass Entrance Station, across the meadow with almost half the route through the woods interrupted by snow. Stayed on route to just below the plateau but then freestyled to the top, partly over snow, partly one stepping-stone at a time. Passed one other soul on his way down but the two of us were the grand total to the top for the day. The wind died for a bit and a little bird joined me to add to the experience of the incredible panorama.
Up and down Mt. Dana with my bike-racing family - a little cross training between race seasons. Up the West Route from Tioga Pass. In a word... Awesome!

Tagged it on the drive out after camping trip. We were the first on the summit that day, which made it special. Stupendous views in all directions. Short, intense hike was surprisingly pleasurable.

Regular route
With Mike Chen. A light snow cover added to the fun. Gorgeous views.
Pretty steep climb up talus, rocks and boulders but made it up in 2 1/2 hours. Fantastic views. Worried about elevation but had no problems other than having to rest more often on the way up.
Nice jaunt through the wilderness to the summit. Only took 4 hours to go up and down. Really great views from the top. Kind of crowded though.

great hike/climb
I hiked to the top in sept/2010...it was a great hike, the route about 2/3 of the way up is pretty much "pick your route" since it is mostly broken rock and talus, but it sure felt great to summit. You can see quite a lot from up there.

So Many CairnsMany misleading cairns on the easiest route. You'll save time if you just pick your line up the slope and go. Great views and worth your time.
