"As an adolescent I aspired to lasting fame, I craved factual certainty, and I thirsted for a meaningful vision of human life - so I became a scientist. This is like becoming an archbishop so you can meet girls."

Route Climbed: Gulfside Trail From Mt. Clay Date Climbed: July 19, 2004Tagged this summit with my brother on the way from Mt. Washington, on a foggy, rain-soaked day. Views extended about 15 feet from the summit, so there wasn't too much to see. I got the feeling though that the Gulfside Trail on a sunny day could be quite the awesome hike, so I'll be back.

Route Climbed: Caps Ridge Date Climbed: July 4, 1994Bagged this peak several times. Caps ridge is fun. Best hikes were traverses. First was up the Caps Ridge, over Jefferson, Clay, Washington, and Monroe, down Ammonousuc, and walk back up the road to the Caps trailhead. Second was with a car shuttle, up the Caps, over Jefferson, Adams, side trip to Madison and down the Air Line.

Route Climbed: Caps Ridge Trail Date Climbed: August 25th,2003An excellent hike in not so excellent weather! The summit was totally fogged in and the wind was gusting to about 35 mph. The temp on top was 47F, making it feel about 22F with windchill. We stayed on the summit just long enough to snap a photo, then we booked it off that mountain! Caps Ridge Trail is a great route, shortest in the Presidentials, making for a quick summit. It also has some great class 3 scrambling most of the way. We have a detailed report and lots of photos of the route and the foggy summit on our website at Natural Born Hikers Check it out sometime!

Route Climbed: Caps Ridge & Cornice Date Climbed: August 11, 2002Absolute perfect day to climb in the presies. 68 degrees on Washington. Planned on going up Caps Ridge, then heading over Gulfside to Lowe's Path & up Adams. Return via Israel Ridge, Gulfside, Cornice & Caps Ridge. About 10.5 miles in all. Caps Ridge was moderate compared to other trails in the Whites. Some difficult areas to scramble up but nothing too tough. At the top, there's some rock hopping to the summit but nothing out of the ordinary. The Cornice is a moderate trail skirting around the summit cone of Jefferson. Just a ton of more rock hopping. Definitely pick a good day to do any of the Presidentials as the cairns can be tough to find in poor visibility and weather is well-known to be very dangerous in the Presidentials. Gorgeous views altogether.

Route Climbed: Northern Presidential Traverse - Gulfside/Jefferson Loop Date Climbed: 6/25/02Third summit during the Northern Traverse.....going uphill seems to be getting much easier for some reason. In fact, I never thought I'd say it, but I'm starting to prefer it compared to descending....perhaps because the rocks are starting to beat the ever-living crap out of my knees. The Gulfside trail between Adams and Jefferson blows.
Since there's currently no mountain listing for Mt. Clay, I'll add that one under this....Mt. Clay was perhaps my favorite summit of the Northern Traverse. Gave outstanding views of Mt. Wahington, and the rest of the N. Presidentials. It was at this point where one really starts to get a feeling of accomplishment during the hike.
