Defeated
We hiked up from below Granite Park on a mountain rescue training. We got within a few hundred vertical feet of the summit when we decided to turn around due to the precarious nature of many of the VW bug-sized boulders that had to be scrambled over. Getting rescued when you're on a rescue training is never good, so descent was the prudent decision.

Dayhike from Pine Creek TH as part of the 2010 Sierra challenge. Descended a loose, eastern chute to Chalfant lakes. Gorgeous summit view, and Granite park was effing amazing too!

From Italy Pass
Really windy day on the climb up to Italy Pass. Unusually, the wind subsided as we climbed - I'm not used to the weather getting *better* as I climb. Anyways, the system blew through and we had a wonderful time on the summit.
I climbed this peak many years ago, the summer of 1975. It was on a backpacking trip that my parents sent me on. (something like summer camp). Anyway, it was these early backpacks that really got me hooked on the Sierra. I remember this peak well. It was really my first Sierra summit. The only other mountain I had ever climbed up to this point was Mount Lassen with my dad.

South Ridge from Italy Pass
Stuck close to the ridge during the ascent to avoid the sand trail and get in some nice class 3. Went to the false summit and traversed to summit. Couldn't find a summit register. Ran out of film before I shot toward Granite Park/Royce Lakes view--bummer!

SW ridge from Italy Pass
fun, quick route (800') from Italy Pass. Great views from the top. Some sand hiking, some scrambling.
Big loop in the area bagging a few peaks. Great views and nice old summit can. Please DO NOT STEAL REGISTERS, whoever you are! Leave registers at the summit. There was no pen, so I signed in w/ blood ... haha just kidding, just scratched it in with a small pebble.

West Ridge
We hiked in from Honeymoon Lake. After seeing the unappealing appearance of the southwest slope, we hiked over to the west ridge. It was a fun, mostly class two route, with boulders that got progressively larger the higher we got. We couldn't find the Sierra Club register but did find an old cigar box originally placed by David Brower. Some people had taken his register to San Francisco for "safe keeping" on July 4th of this year. :( They left the cigar box.
We didn't sign the rust-stained little book they'd left as a substitute for the original register as we didn't have a pen.

Nice view of Granite Park area, and ended up camping at the pass for the night.
Steep snow chute on the bottom half. No crampons the snow was soft. Very loose rock. A couple of car sized boulders had fallen into the snow field a few days prior. Class 2-3
