"Got tight last night on absinthe and did knife tricks. Great success shooting the knife into the piano. The woodworms are so bad and eat hell out of all furniture that you can always claim the woodworms did it."

Windy Winter climbPlan was to attempt Presidential Traverse but bad weather only allowed us to summit Madison and camp out one night (below 0 degrees) before heading down. Quite windy above the hut to the summit, snowshoes for entire trail up to the hut.

Madison/Adams LoopTook the Valley Way trail and then the Gulfside trail up to the summit. It was a beautiful day, and there was no wind on the summit, with temps in the 60s. The fall colors had hit their peak earlier in the week, so the view from the summit was phenomenal. This was a much easier trip than my first attempt at the Madison/Adams combo, three years before. That time, my friend and I got practically blown off the mountain in whiteout conditions.

Mount Madison ClimbDid this as part of a long hike up Mount Adams, Jefferson, Monroe, and Madison. I don't remember the order, just that my buddy Chris and I were exhausted at the end of the day and having to stop to make some food in the dark because I was so hungry.

Finally! Finally bagged Madison on my 2nd attempt. First was a bust in the Winter when a -40 windchill blue bird sky day payed me a visit on my way up to Adams and Madison. Finally bagged in in the Spring. Stayed at Crag Camp Friday night, hit Adams in the morning and dropped my pack and summited Madison within an hour in high winds and low visibility. It was eerie but I made it out alive.

Winter climbWalked up on 01/08/14 during the 'Polar Vortex' sweeping the Northeast. Started at the Appalachia parking lot via Airline trail to the Madison Hut and then followed the Osgood trail to the summit. Bitingly cold and windy at the top but clear, as opposed to the nearby Mt. Adams which was all covered in clouds. According to the Mt. Washington Weather Observatory it was around -15F (with -35F windchill) that day. Returned quickly via the Valley Way trail. Awesome winter hike!!!

kept on truckinCrawled up Madison after doing Adams via the Air Line Trail, took the Pine Link to the Watson Path, .5 miles of rock pile, then the Brookside back. The Brookside was very dark, eerie, and only saw tracks from one other hiker, no crowds on this one. Got a little ill from overexertion after seeing a beautiful, plush, mossy area that The Elves might enjoy or even inhabit from time to time. Kept trucking down after being sick, made it out though. This was the most strenuous hike of all the NH 5000+ footers for me, but also the one with great weather and splendid views.
