Mount Thompson, Peyto Hut approach hazard

Mount Thompson, Peyto Hut approach hazard

This large glacial moat (maybe 20 meters deep) is on the eastern edge of the Wapta Icefield, just north of where you gain the south ridge from the ice field. At least one skier has dropped into it in poor visibility while approaching Thompson from the Peyto Hut. Forewarned is forearmed. August 8, 2009.

Yeah, but would

"climate change" be having an effect on this
area, or is this Icefield just as healthy as
it was back in the 1980's ???

Final question:

Doesn't the Park Service put out wands on
the Icefield, or are folks pretty much on
their own and subject to their own means of
finding their way across the ice ?

(Thanks, Steve - awesome set of pictures!)

Re: Yeah, but would

Glacial recession has been changing routes in Canada for the last 100 years.

And no, Parks Canada doesn't wand the icefields.
