I was the 6th person to reach the summit on March 7, and the 8th in 2004. (2 guys made it to the top in February).
Climbed the MR with Jim. Day 1: ~7200' to LBSL. Day 2: LBSL to the moraine right under the east face. Day 3: climb MR to summit, back down to LBSL. Day 4: back to the truck.
We had perfect snow and weather conditions. Thanks to the guys from Ohio for breaking trail all the way up to Iceburg lake.
Almost everyone on the mountain was a summit post member.
Route Climbed: Mountaineer's Date Climbed: March 7, 2004
We started at 12:45 am from Upper Boy Scout. Beautiful, clear night, full moon - didn't have to use headlamps. Above Iceberg Lake we had to break the trail, slow going. I summited at 8:30 am. Perfect weather, nobody else on the summit - how ofted does that happen?
Route Climbed: Whitney Trail Date Climbed: 9/10/01
We hiked the Whitney Trail in one long day. We left at 3 am and got back something like 6:00 pm. Notice the date. We climbed this mountain the day before 9/11. We actually got back home (by plane from Las Vegas - Seattle) on 9/11. I went to bed about 3 hours before the first plane struck WTC. Little surreal.
We have been back twice now to do the Mountaineer's Route. Because of various reasons, we've yet to summit via MR. Hopefully, third time is a charm as we will be attempting another go via MR in April/May 2004.
I climbed with my family, it was my first time to carry my own pack I had lots of fun, but every night it rained for about an hour and on my last day we hiked to the bottom through some hail and sleet. i was nine.
Route Climbed: Mountaineers Route Date Climbed: April 27, 2003
We took the steep gully on the way up and returned via the traverse. There was a bone chilling wind at the top that significantly shortened our summit siesta.
Route Climbed: Whitney Trail Date Climbed: September 5, 2003
First time up the long but spectacular main trail. Thankfully the we left at 4:15AM on a Friday and the crowds had probably thinned out a bit since labor day weekend so it was a few notches closer to a "wilderness experience". We made good time, hitting the top in just a hair under 5 hours including breaks and water refills at Trail Camp. Incredible view from the top in every direction, thankfully, as by 11:30AM the previous day storms were already firing up on the Sierra Crest. This is what inspired us to shoot for the top early and fast. Total trip time just under 12 hrs including a hour and a half on top and Mt. Muir. Be back when the snow melts in 2004 to test out the MR.
I first climbed this peak in 2000, and then climbed it for the second time in 2001. It was an inspirational time, seeing that we were just one month removed from the tragedy on Sept 11th. Someone had carried a huge American flag to the summit, which made the moment even better. I was with my girlfriend at the time who was so excited to summit Whitney. We sat down on the summit and enjoyed a snack together. When she opened up the peanut butter jar, inside was a diamond ring. The moment couldn't have been better to get engaged. She said YES !!!
Route Climbed: Whitney Trail Date Climbed: 20th October 2003
Hiked up with hyperbolictans and rgreene and friends. First major hike ever for me! Camped at the Portal and hiked up to Trail camp in ~6 hours. Felt OK but should have stoped and had lunch at Outpost Camp. Broke camp at 4 am and headed up the 99's. Great view on the backside of the massif, unfortunately drained my 3 litres before the summit. This made for a strong headache and a long walk down. Can't wait to do the mountaineers route in summer '04!
Route Climbed: Whitney Trail, East Face (2x) Date Climbed: August 1982, 1985, 1986
Hiked up the trail in '82 while backpacking the John Muir Trail. Climbed the East Face with long time climbing partner and friend John Pfeiffer in '85. Climbed East Face again in '86 with Bruce Hubbard.
Route Climbed: Whitney Trail Date Climbed: 2003 October 20
Weather was great that day.
View from the ridge/JMT trail of Whitney and its adjoining ridge reminds me of a high wave coming from the west just about to break onto shore

Route Climbed: Mountaineers' Route Date Climbed: November 28, 2003
Much less snow that the year before - I was lugging snowshoes and have not used them at all! Otherwise great time, sunny on Nov 27, 2003 on the approach to Iceberg Lake. Cloudy and windy on Nov 28. The last part from the notch to the summit was more exposed than I thought - but not really technical. It was just me on the mountain - had a blast!
