A friend and I also went through Timberline Guides on our first attempt on Hood. We ended up on a guided team with Joe as well. We turned back at the base of the Hogsback though. I ended up coming back a year later by myself to re-attempt it with a couple SP guys and made it a little above the Palmer chairlift. The next night I solo'ed it and finally topped out. Whew!
Sounds like a fun climb, remindes me of my first time on a volcano (Mt. Baker). Especially the sulfer smell, I thought it was someone in our group too! Welcome to the sport!
If you liked climbing Mt. Hood, you're gonna love climbing Mt. Shasta...plus, it's right in your own backyard! Avalanche Gulch on the South side is the milk run, but I would highly recommend the Hotlum Bolam ridge on the North side. It is much more aesthetic and not nearly as crowded. The best thing about Shasta is that there is a variety of climbs of varying difficulty, enough to keep you busy for years. Plus it's just a beautiful mountain!
I am itching for a big cascade volcano myself, I'm going to bookmark this and refer back to it once I am geared up for Hood after I finish up school this summer.
Son,
It was a great story. You did a wonderfull job on keeping me entertained with the story line. But slow down and smell the Roses so to speak. Great photo's. You do me proud!
