Gleann, Coire, Lairig, Bealach or Clais

Whether you are in a Scottish gleann or above a gleann, either is an excellent place to be.

There are five main names that are found on maps for this type of area.

Gleann: Gaelic for valley.
Coire: Gaelic for corrie, cirque or hollow.
Lairig: Gaelic for pass.
Bealach Gaelic for pass(in hills).
Clais: Gaelic for narrow valley or gap.

Please attach any of your pictures of your time in and around the Glens.

Great Idea:

The Scottish Glens are great places.
One question though...? Does this album also cover the Dales in the Borders Counties such as Annandale and Moffat Dale etc.
These are both deep cut valleys in the hills.

Had not considered the fact that the areas in the south of Scotland had this name variation. If you want to include them David, that's fine by me. Probably a good theme for a Welsh and English version of this album for someone, with quite a bit of pictures available already.

great idea ! in fact while reading Yatsek's Carpathian article the other day, it came to my mind that such pages could be welcome for other mountain ranges. There is such dictionary with pyrenean dialect, and for Scottish names as well, just like those you listed. A complete list could be a sort of good article !
