Troop 1339 Ascends Ostler  Sucess!

We took the Boys on a Day Hike up Ostler Peak as we camped a week by Ostler Lake to work on Merit Badges and have fun. Rugged Hike with really no trail. There's a neat "Pulpit" rock formation about 2/5ths the way up from which you can preach to the meadow below. We went up on the red line in the photo but came down the gulleys to the left of that (as viewed looking down from the summit) towards the small lake just above Ostler Lake. You don't really want to be in a rush coming down the steep boulders if they're wet so keep an eye on the clouds. Vigorous hike and lovely views. There's a large Cairn at the top with glass mason jar tucked in it for the Register. I couldn't find any Benchmark and suspect there isn't one there. Enjoy.

That buzzing sound...  Sucess!

The second I hit the ridge on the false summit my pack started to buzz. Dropped down and waited out the clouds overhead, then booked it to the summit and got hailed on when I got back to my pack. Didn't stay up there for long, wasn't a fun place to be

North ridge  Sucess!

Anne Perry and I started about 8am from the Christmas Meadows TH. It was a nice day and we didn't have to worry about storms. At the trail split we took Ostler Fork to the stream crossing at a large meadow and then made our way to the north ridge which we followed to the top. It took about 4.5 hours to get there. The start of the ridge is annoyingly loose stuff, but it gets better after awhile. On the way down, we took the obvious chute to the west which starts at about 11600' at a small saddle. I also hiked this in 2001 with MM by essentially the same route.

Route climbed: North Ridge  Sucess!

Ascended the slope just to the west of the north ridge until about 11,800 ft, then kept to the ridge the rest of the way to the summit. Continued along the ridge for an attempt on Spread Eagle before being chased off towards Gladys Lake by t-storms. Made Spread Eagle's summit the next morning. Skeeters were thick at times, but a great couple of days and not a soul around once the trails were left behind!

White flies, no skeeters  Sucess!

No rain and no bugs, but "white flies" galore. The lakes froze overnight and didn't yet melt by early afternoon. Up N Ridge, back glissading the 1000-ft bowl to its West. Beautiful ice floes on Amethyst Lake!

Climbed both Lamotte & Ostler the same day with Tom May from our base camp near the meadows east of Ostler Lake - needless to say - one fine day!
