Indian Ocean crocodilefish – Indiai-óceáni krokodilhal (1 m)
The Tentacled flathead (Papilloculiceps longiceps) or Crocodilefish is a member of the order Scorpaeniformes, an order which also includes the scorpionfishes and stonefishes.
Common in sheltered bays and lagoons, 1 to 40 m. Usually lies on sand or rubble close ot reefs, often partly buried. Highly cryptic, an ambushing predator of crabs, shrimps and fishes. Top of pupil with expandable branched sunshade, called an iris lappet. Easily approached.
Range: Red Sea to Oman,south to S. Africa.
