Route Climbed: Round Valley / Wellman Divide Date Climbed: 2/28/04
Did a snowshoe hike from Long Valley to Wellman Divide and then countoured around Jean and up to Jacinto. Three feet of fresh snow made for a great day. No need to go up to Wellman Divide. Next time I'll just make a more direct route like everyone else. Took ice axe and crampons but they weren't needed.
Route Climbed: Round Valley Date Climbed: Feb. 15 2004
Have climbed the Skyline trail to Round Valley many times but never completed the trip to the Peak. Had great weather on top with about three feet of snow.
With sticking in the drainages to the right cuts off at least a mile.
Route Climbed: Deer Springs Date Climbed: May 27, 2000
One of many trips to the top but this was a memorable one. Ran the route from the county park in town to the top and back with 13 time Catalina Marathon winner, Bill McDermott, and a few others. A fire was burning nearby and the Devil Slide trail was closed. Our group was interviewed by a Palm Springs TV crew when we arrived back down.
Route Climbed: Trail - Seven Pines???? Date Climbed: July 2001
A nice overnighter at Little Round Valley. Sat on the summit for over an hour looking over at San G. Almost stepped on a baby rattlesnake near the trailhead on the way down.
Route Climbed: Complete Fuller Ridge dayhike Date Climbed: Oct 31, 1997
Long dayhike by my standards, but pretty fun. Got buzzed by gliders at the top. They sneak up on you silently then suddnely there's a loud whizzing as they fly past you. I didn't see it coming and it nearly jumped out of my skin.
Route Climbed: Devil's Slide/Wellman's Divide Date Climbed: 10 January 2004
This was an absolute perfect day in SoCal and San Jac was a pleasure to play on. Hard to believe how warm it was daytime and my Round Valley bivy got down in the 20's that night! Now that I successfully summited, I can start checking out the nearby peaks ... Jean, Cornell, Carumba.....
Route Climbed: Devil's Slide Date Climbed: 6 December 2003
Poor pitiful me! The weather shot me down but I had a successful bivy in Round Valley. Low 30's and 15 mhp winds, rain clouds racing in early afternoon. Too much ice and not enough gear.
Route Climbed: Marion Moutnatin Trail Date Climbed: Nov 22, 2003
Nice hike up to the summit. We encounted a well consolidated snow on the trail about 1/3-rd way up. Kicked steps on the final slope to bypass the switchbacks. We carried trekking poles.
If next storm deposits more snow, the snowshoes will be a must.
Route Climbed: Round Valley Date Climbed: August 24, 2003
Great hike. Just a little rain & lightning on the way down. Got "buzzed" ("Whooshed?") by gliders while on the peak. Seriously crazy dudes. Wingtips within ~10 ft. of peak rocks, and NOT above them! Fun day with 5 others..
My Friday morning started off with a nice drive from San Diego to Mount San Jacinto via I 8 to hwy 79 - hwy 371- hwy 74- hwy 111...that was a very relaxing drive... I was facinated (not hard for a Marine) by the beauty of the country side. I would recommend this route if your not in a hurry. After stopping several times to get some photos I finally made it to the Palm Spring side of the mountain and with two gallons of water and my trusty day pack I made my way up the steep grade in the parking lot on the way to the ticket booth and rode the tram up to the mountain...I don't think I like that tram and will probably assault that peak from Humber park. Meet several hikers at the summit, took a few pictures and enjoyed the beautiful weather. The Park Rangers were spread through out the area and most asked to see your hiking pass...You don't have to wait for the station to open, just grab a pass fill it out, drop the original off and keep your carbon! On the way out drop off the carbon copy!
Route Climbed: Devil Slide Date Climbed: November 22, 2002
Excellent night hike! Did it in ~8hours. Cold at night with the wind chill, but worth the climb. Summit Hut door kept opening with the wind and didn't provide wind block like we expected.
Route Climbed: Deer Springs Trail Date Climbed: Sept. 1, 2003
Third summit for me (first via Deer Springs), first summit for my wife, Gabriela. We summited about 6:05 am from Little Round Valley so we could watch the 6:12 am sunrise. Spectacular sunrise! See my trip report for details, water locations, and you can click here to see my photos.
Note: the summit register in the hut is full and people are leaving scraps of paper. Someone needs to bring up a new log book.
Route Climbed: Marion Mountain Trail Date Climbed: August 21, 2003
My first time up, decided on a sunrise ascent. Left a little later than expected, got on the trail at 3:25am. Almost got lost a few times on the hike up, being dark and all. It was a beautiful night, lots of stars, a half moon, and not a soul in earshot. Just made sunrise by 5min.
Route Climbed: Devil's Slide Date Climbed: May 18, 2003
We made it this time! engineer_charley and I on our second attempt to make it thru the snow. Beautiful view from the top. Couldn't find the summit log, maybe under the snow? Lots of people on the summit but most took the easy way and rode the tram from Palm Springs.
Route Climbed: cactus 2 clouds Date Climbed: june 14 2003
left ramon street at around 7:00a and hit the tram with our group of eight around 3:00p. Not too bad, even with 100 degree heat - it gets cooler as you go up. After a quick nap, headed for the summit at 4:30p but turned around at wellman junction around 6:00p so we wouldn't miss the tram and have to walk down. nice trip, bring as much water as you can drink! the sign says "1.5 gallons", i'm more like bring 2 gallons in tha summer. I'd probably leave a little earlier to make a summit bid next time, too. Good times . . .
