The Poop Album.

Dedicated to the proposition that bears do shit in the woods. (Along with all of their wild brethren.) Feel free to add your own images of wild poop you have seen.

The presence of scat is a major indicator of the animals present in the hikes and climbs the members here take. Post your photos as able. Try to avoid posting the scat of feral animals such as dogs (or pets).

Album name

I like the idea, but the name is crap. (Pardon the pun.) I think a more professional sounding name would be better than "Poop". How about "Animal Scat"?

Also, you might consider stating some guidelines, like only mountain animals, so people don't upload a bunch of photos of dog shit.

Re: Album name

Well, I figured most members here would post wild animal sign.

I'll consider the "scat" suggestion, but as the concept was intended partially educational, partially humorous, I'll leave it at "poop" for now.

Re: Album name

It will be interesting to see where this leads and who participates. Personally, I would value a serious album that could be used as a reference library for identifying animal scat much more than a humorous album. One that identifies the animal and has some discipline so as not to have 25 different photos of the same kind of scat. (Do we really need 25 photos of deer scat to identify what it is?) I'll upload a few photos when I get some time. Cheers...

Re: Album name

I too like the idea of making this a reference album for scat identification. Perhaps the photographers who have not identified their contributions by species could be nudged to do so?

Those who are uncertain can consult the children's book series "Who Pooped in the Park?" by Gary D. Robson and Robert Rath. They have about a dozen such books, each focusing on a different national park.

Really.

Re: Album name

Well, I didn't mean the subject to be humorous. Just the title. I always look to see what kind of scat I can locate on the trails I hike. Great indication of animals present and their relative numbers.

I'll take the advice and change the title.

Re: Album name

There is actually a book called "Know Your Shit" that is a field guide to wildlife scat, but I couldn't find it on Amazon.com.
I could submit a picture of a cow pie to go with the livestock albums that have recently been added to SP.

Weird

I wouldn't normally vote a 10 for this crap, butt, doo doo to the couple of low votes and the uniqueness of the album I felt that giving it a 10 wouldn't hurt. Great idea!!

Re: Weird

Thanks. (Nice puns, too.)

I figured I'd start the album because I always photograph all animal sign I see on my hikes and scrambles. Including animal scat. I had noticed that a few other SP members had posted a few doo doo photos. A good indicator of animal populations in any system.

Ha.

I would like to see some Endangered Feces. I usually don't make it a habbit of shooting the crap with my camera, but I will have to watch for some. I was out in the wetlands a bit ago, and there were owl pellets all over the place. Guess I should have taken some pics.

Re: Ha.

Owl pellets would be a good addition.

Good idea

Yeah, I wanna know what crap looks like from different animals.
Informative.
The scratch and sniff books on this subject are the most accurate. ;)

Album Revamp

I like the idea for this album...but what about making it a bit more systematic? Call it Animal Spoor, and then have children pages for different animals. Each children page could have as many photos of feces, tracks, and other animal sign for that particular animal, particularly because spoor can look different in different parts of the country or world depending on diet or lighting. The different array of photos would become a tool to help other SPers identify the animal spoor properly in the field. I realize that this may be too big of a project of this kind for SP. That's ok. My undergrad degree is in Wildlife Biology and I just think this way!

I'd be happy to let you edit the page. Let me know so I can let the elves do the math.

mystery scat

so i was doing some contracting work in Prescott, Az and found a boxed in cubby hole (3'x4') in an abandoned building, the wall had been recently opened up and there was this scat….. big, black, the size and shape of dried up prune pellets, i should've gotten a picture and can go back for one but curious if anyone had any ideas, i have seen lots of scat in rural Az but this was in a semi-developed area (w/open high desert land around it) and i had never seen the likes - too small for dear or bear and in a rural shopping ctr…

thanks - toby
