This was my first big hike, which caused me to fall in love with the mountains. We took three days and played the whole time. It is an easy mountain, but has great views.

The Other South Sister
Yep, it's just a 5000' gain slog, but I enjoyed the trip. The snow-filled crater on top was so nice. My wife accompanied me, and didn't hate me afterward! Did lots of hiking around Bend while working on a drill rig. What a magical place.
2nd in my 2007 Cascade Challenge Volcanofest. Started from Devils Lake TH @ 8.01. Pretty much just putting one foot in front of the other- OVER & OVER & OVER & OVER- & eventually at the summit (12.24). Passed 3 or so parties on way up (was passed by one). Hung out @ summit, ate, & took in amazing view. HUNDREDS (thousands?) of butterflies swarming over summit. Had had thoughts of going over to Middle Sister from S, but when I looked across, I knew that wasn't going to happen that day- no way I felt like another 3,000' vertical on top of the 5 I'd just done (food & beer won out). After talking to a nice couple for awhile, left summit at 14.25. Great glissading on way down. Back at TH @ 17.26, followed by food & beer @ Cascade Lakes brewpub at roundabout. Great day!
4.5 hours RT from Moraine Lake (not including time spent at the summit). Did not need crampons/axe on the ascent, but we were able to glissade 1/2 of the way down. Had the summit to ourselves for over an hour. Great views.

South Ridge
Solo ascent up the climbers trail from Devil's Lake Campground. I was on snow more or less the entire time except for the very beginning and near the end. The final 2000' to the summit was VERY windy.. sand and pebbles being sprayed everywhere and I had to maintain quite a low profile on the summit to keep from being blown off. All in all more of a nuisance than a danger though, and I had a blast. Views were somewhat obstructed by the near-constant lenticular cloud over the summit, but again, fantastic day.

Solo ascent. Left trailhead at 9am, summit at 3pm, left at 3:15, down at 6:15. The last 1500 feet of ascent took me over 2 hours, felt like my feet were glued to the ground. Combination of altitude gain (was at sea level at 6 am) and dehydration. I can never drink enough at elevation. Otherwise fun day, beautiful weather, windy at the summit, but not too cold. 2nd ascent, and first 10K summit since 1988.

Beautiful Day!
A beautiful day to summit South Sister, with views all around! Such warm temps with no wind, camping at the "golf course" felt like the middle of summer. Looking forward to Middle and North Sister next! :)

Phew! That was hard.
I am SO GLAD I did this in the fall. Weather was perfect, altho it clouded over when we summitted (of course) and was raining in earnest by the end. Even though late in the season, still lots of people. Realigned my perspective on what's possible for me to do out there.

South Ridge from Moraine Lake
I climbed South Sister back in my days of Boy Scouts as part of a fifty-miler. We camped at Moraine lake our third night, and got up before sunrise and climbed on our "rest" day. Beautiful day. The views to the north and east were impaired by the 20,000 ft smoke columns produced by that summers forest fires. Impressive sight.

A face in the crowd
Mike and I walked up to Moraine Lake and camped. Headlamps going up the ridge above at 3:00am We left at sunrise. Nothing to add. Lots of people, all pretty well behaved. Very smoggy on both sides. This is a straightforward trail walk in good weather this time of year.
on the way home from another climb, we saw this peak and haven't not climbed it yet, decided to do so. picked a nice line up (found out later it was the prouty). since it was spring, we found ice flows (WI 2-3)over the cliffs so opted to do them as a variation. thawing conditions were causing lots of ice fall in the upper sections of the ice gully above the cliffs and rockfall across the glacier on the descent. like turning our backs to a firing squad!

With Bob and Rick. Cold, no views, and not much of a climb either. This was the first peak of a generally disappointing road trip (thanks first to bad weather, then some painful tendonitis in my knee) to the OR Cascades.
Hiked to the summit of South Sister in September 1977 while in high school and camping at Green Lakes with a group of friends. It was a clear day when we started but a cloud enveloped the summit as we reached it and we were in white out conditions so there were no summit views. Didn't get too disoriented and I managed to find and touch the summit register but didn't take time to sign it (my friends said this meant the climb didn't count). As soon as we were barely off the summit the clouds cleared off.
