Filters! Heck no!We rarely treated our water either. Once in awhile (Here she goes again, talking about the good 'ole days.......) we dropped clorox into our water or boiled it but that was only if it "looked" dirty!

When I was a boy scoutgrowing up in Utah, we were told to boil our
water.
I ended up doing that twice in the Cascades.
Majority of the time, I just looked for the
closest waterfall and drank to my heart's
content.

Re: When I was a boy scoutThe problem with giardia probably was brought to our attention in the late 80's, particularly in the Cascades. I can't speak about other ranges or areas but the impact of more and more people increased the incidence.
The Enchantments for example, were being loved to death and people just didn't do a very good job of digging good cat holes.
Most of us decided to start filtering instead of risking giardia. Sad..
