My first climbed in DVNP, reached the summit with Caz and Ang. It's a nice introduction to the park to see the great vertical relief between the summit and Badwater firsthand, not to mention the view to Mt. Whitney...

Eff me.
All time great epics. Snow, sand, wind, cold, hot, pissed, bitter, happy, emotional, fucked up, neurotic and insecure. All in all a good day.
Sounds like hike was 'FINE' - fucked up, insecure, neurotic and emotional.

Nice return trip
First hiked it in March 1997. Tried again in April 2003, but there was too much snow. This time, I started about half an hour before dawn. July temps were cool enough that I kept long sleeves on for about half of the hike up. It was warm and pleasant on the way down.

From Mahogany Flat spring 2012
With Greg. Had been a light snow year, so less snow than probably usual. But above 10,000 the snow increased (a storm a few days prior no doubt contributed)and the final summit bit was covered. Could not find the switchbacks reported for the last leg, so essentially went straight up, postholing 1-2 ft all the way. Quite a mountain. It was great to stand there and contemplate Mt. Charleston to the east, and now I can remember standing on Telescope as I see it often from the high Spring Mountains.

Wow, this was a long hike, especially since I started from Thorndike campground. Really cold wind once you get on the ridge. It was amazing to see Badwater Basin from there, over 2 vertical miles lower.
Well maintained trail all the way to the top! Great dayhike!

From Mahogony Flat TH
A nice, clear day with outstanding views and calm winds. Taking the hiking trail, rather than the snow covered road up Rogers, there were some ice patches to step over and/or be cautious with on the stretch near the trailhead. Snow began in earnest from Arcane Meadow onward, but was not deep enough to slow my pace. I sometimes avoided snow by sticking to the ridgeline. Upon reaching the final, steep climb up Telescope, I bypassed the potentially icy switchbacks by heading straight up the north/northeast ridge in soft ankle to shin deep snow. I was fine in my waterproof hiking boots with trekking poles. I summited Bennett on the way back from Telescope, but didn't want to deal with Rogers (got a late midday start/finished in the dark as it was), nor the deeper snow of the north facing slopes of the road down from it...maybe a quick summit of Rogers next time I go to DVNP.

Spectacular hike to a surprisingly nice summit with commanding views. This was a great way to finish a trip that started with a turn-around on Whitney at 13,200 feet.

From Shorty's Well
Used Mt. Bike from Shorty's Well to the narrows of Hanaupah Canyon, then hiked. Started at 4 am, reached Telescope peak at 1 pm, had lunch, and returned to Shorty's at 6:30 pm. Beautiful day, a little wind on the summit ridge, minor easily-avoidable ice on the final switchbacks. Camped at Mahogany Flats and hiked to the summit with friend Ed and niece Megan as a warm-up climb for Mount Whitney Mountaineer's Route. Pleasant day with great views of Badwater and Mount Whitney. We had the mountain to ourselves. 74 degrees driving back down service road and 114 degrees in Stovepipe Wells just a few miles away.
