A look at the first section of the off-trail route between Ptarmigan Tunnel and Redgap Pass. The broad, distinct notch that is the first landmark is clearly visible in the center of the ridgetop (marked with the #1). To gain the ridge, hike the maintained trail until a stream of scree spills down the mountainside from the right (very near the two small snow patches that are visible just above the trail). The trail bends west just after the scree; leave the trail at this point and follow ledges and game trails to the ridgetop.
From there, traverse northward past three additional notches (all severely steep and impassable) until reaching a fourth notch that sits 20-30 feet below the ridgetop. This notch (marked with the #2), marks the start of the goat trail descent towards Redgap pass.
