Alpine start made for a beautiful sunrise
Started at 3am under a star-strewn sky. Watched the sunrise bloom as I went up the final slope. Views from the top are tremendous; I don't think there is a better perspective of the Sierra escarpment anywhere. Would be lovely to be up here in winter with perfect air quality.
Lots of marmots, but only one person (out of 10+) wrapped their car.

Walk up with the chance to see Big Horn Sheep
This became my go to peak to take first time folk aspiring to 14ers. Don’t forget to stop on the way and see the Bristle Cone National Monument.
This time with Lorraine. A shake down hike before Whitney.

Woo hoo! my 3rd California 14er!
Loved the hike, the views were great. Fairly easy except for the altitude gave me a bit of elevation sickness that made me a little slower.

incredible view
In my opinion one of the best views in CA...breathtaking vista of Sierra crest on one side and aerial view over the basin and range province on the other.

White Mountain Peak
Perfect weather and not many people on the mountain. White Mountain Peak was my 31st ultra prominence peak and 4th California 14er.
3rd time up white mountain peak. This time hiked with Harvey, Mary and Katie. All made it- 4 1/2 hours up and 3 hours down. Got a chance to see inside the mountain top research station. Glad we went on Saturday and didn't have to deal with the crowds on Sunday when road was open to Barcroft.
Although the trail is easy class 1 from Barcroft gate, the altitude really hit on the last stretch of switchbacks! Incomparable views, however, and the never-ending road to the trailhead was OK with 2wd HC, driven carefully.

The drive was slower than expected off of Highway 395. Camped at the Barcroft gate. Wonderful views! Great time.

The Road
Beautiful and cold. Took a nice nap on the summit. Didn't see another soul the entire day.

Lots of Bighorn Sheep
Road bikes from the gate, but only made it about 3 miles. Dropped the bikes and continued the rest of the way. Large herd of Bighorns were hanging out near the summit.
Bikes helped a little on the return, but without shocks, it was a bumpy ride.
Suzi stayed in the trailer in Mammoth while Todd and I camped at Grandview for the night before the hike. Todd drove down Silver Canyon on the way back - fun.

Got Hailed On
Saw a pack of about 15 big horn sheep during the descent. Then as I about 1/4 mi from reaching the end of the trail it started hailing the size of marbles. I found shelter in a Porta Potty as I waited out the brunt of the storm. When I opened the door, the entire ground was covered in about 2" of hail and ice.

Crowded but still fun
There must have been nearly 100 people on their way up or down on this open-gate day. Camped at Grandview and then drove to the research station. Even so it took 3.5 hours to the summit. Totally clear day with some wind and a little smoke haze, but awesome views
