spring day hike
Took off on Sunday for a nice spring day hike of Mt McLoughlin. Left from around milepost 31 on Hwy 140. Avalanche conditions were moderate so I headed for the east ridge. This was easy to gain and easy to follow to the summit. Various snow conditions - crusty, powder, ice, neve. It was around 60 deg on the summit with no wind, pretty awesome day. Beautiful views of the southern Cascades. Snowshoes were helpful - still lots of snow on the mountain.
Winter route is correct. Would not be pleasant in summer. Nice campspots all the way, especially around 7000 ft. Beware of the lava beds if you descend too far to the west.
