Re: What a beautifulThank you Baz :)
This area is naturally colorfull all day because of all the sandstone rock, but near the sunset time the colos become even warmer and more intense.

You have to be picky...To get a photo such as yours. I know you love the Spring Mtns. - but, have you ever been to Valley of Fire State Park??? Wouldn't that be a GREAT place to get the interplay of light as it illuminates sandstone? Please sign me up!!!

Re: You have to be picky...Thank you. I was simply in the right place at the right time. We came down the mountain late in the day and were rewarded to this play of light and clouds in late afternoon.
I have been to the Valley of Fire many times, but never in late afternoon. I took my dog there too. He had fun scrambling on the sandstone but didn't like the stairs on Atlatl rock that much ;)

Beautiful slideshow ...AND, looks like Hadrian had a GREAT time. Now, I need to check where Hidden Valley is on the topo map. The southeast side of Muddy Peak??? (Nope, might be the I-15 side.)
Looks like a person could spend at least two days of exploring ... these Mojave landforms. As vast & desolate as they are.
The petroglyphs! Must be a lot of them inside Lake Mead NRA; which tribe is responsible??? Forefathers of the Moapa? Thanks!

Re: Beautiful slideshow ...The Hidden Valley is on the north side of the Muddy Mountains. The access to it is via the rough 4WD road marked on the Nevada Road & Recreation map as Bitter Springs Trail. This is a remote area, there is no visitor center, no rangers and no trails. You need to hike over a low ridge to get into this valley.
As for the Native Americans, the Paiutes are our local tribe, but I don't know exactly who made all the petroglyphs.

One final thought...You mean, there's STILL a place in the Lower 48 with NO visitor center, NO rangers and NO trails? Seems like an APPEALING place to me.!! Cheers and take care!

Re: One final thought...I know what you mean. The no trails factor is one of the reasons why I like the Lake Mead area and Muddies so much.
