My partner and I took the 8:30am hiker's shuttle out of Waterton and hiked the spectacular Carthew-Alderson Trail. I took a brief detour up to the summit by following an obvious use-trail that led from the maintained trail near the pass up to the ridge between the false southern and true summits. Class II all the way. Smoke from the nearby Kenow Fire in British Columbia, as well as fires in Glacier National Park, obscured the views but aside from sustained winds it was an otherwise fantastic day. I took 30 minutes to gain the summit, and just under 20 minutes to run down the loose scree on the east slope down to the uppermost Carthew Lake. We continued along the trail all the way back to town and spent the night at the Belly River Campground near the Chief Mountain border crossing. A wonderful day in the northern Rockies.

Alderson/Carthew peaks
Great Canada Day, bad weather with rain and high winds.
Parked at Cameron Lake, hiked to Summit Lake, then up standard scramble route on Mt. Carthew, then south to scramble Mt. Alderson. Long and interesting day with Martin Siddles.

Windy and fun
We did Carthew then came back the next day to hike Alderson. Both were simple and fun!

Mountain Challenge 98
Carthew, Alderson, Buchanan, and Berta were part of a series of summits in a chain that took over 18 hours to climb. I did it three times that summer with Evan Walters, Adam Hornberger. Dean and Reid Walters did just Carthew and with Jordan Jensen I did them all again. David Walters

Wonderful Waterton
A bitter snowstorm and more nasty weather coming in from the north made it a single summit day. The colours in the rock here look as amazing as they do in photos!

Both Carthew & Buchanan
Very nice day with a GMS group led by Ken McDermott, doing both Carthew and Buchanan. Smoke was terrible, which is too bad, because the views from these peaks of both Waterton and Glacier National Parks is terrific!
